The first Little Athletics Centre was formed in
Geelong in 1969 to promote Family, Fun and Fitness for primary school children. The emphasis is on participation and self-improvement through a range of athletic events: running, jumping and throwing. Little Athletics is now
Australia wide with around 92,500 competitors taking part.
Tasmanian Little Athletics started in Launceston in 1973, and there are now
19 centres operating around the state.
Little Athletics is administered nationally through the Australian Little Athletics Association and statewide through the Tasmanian Little Athletics Association. These bodies control the overall policy making, State and Australian Championships, the accreditation of coaches and officials, and the promotion of Little Athletics on a State and National level.
The Burnie Centre was formed and first operated for the 1989 – 90 season.
It is administered by a committee of volunteers who are elected at the Annual General Meeting, held in April or May each year. We constantly need new blood on the committee so if you are interested, please come along to a committee meeting.
